We all know how powerful “word of mouth” can be, so why not use it to your benefit?

Using your personal profile to promote your store and products will allow everyone to see what you’ve been up to. But don’t oversaturate your personal page with business posts – you don’t want people to scroll past or begin ignoring your posts.

Facebook is a great outlet to use for reaching people when you launch your site. By having friends and family like your business page, prior to the actual launch date you will already be creating buildup on Facebook to get your friends, family, and other followers excited about what you have in store (pun intended!).

The tagging feature on Facebook is definitely one you will want to utilize. You should tag people yourself, but also have friends and family tag others who they think might like your products, in order to reach an even wider audience.

Consider these methods when launching your eCommerce store. Quality is extremely important and you want to make sure you are engaging in methods that will drive high quality traffic to your site. When you feel ready, you can then use more advanced methods like SEO, content strategy, and paid ads to further improve site traffic.

Try Influencer Marketing

This method has gained so much popularity over recent years. Not quite sure what it is? Influencer Marketing is where brands partner with top Instagrammers, bloggers, YouTubers, etc. to increase conversions for their ecommerce stores. This has two great benefits: driving traffic to your site and creating awareness.

Example: Instagram

As always, it is important to start the process with research. Set aside time to really scroll through Instagram, looking for popular accounts in your niche that you truly believe would consider featuring your product on their page. The number of followers’ influencers have can range from hundreds of followers to hundreds of thousands of followers to millions of followers. It is up to you if you want to start with small-scale, micro influencers or large-scale, macro influencers. The search bar is a great tool to help you discover popular users and hashtags or use a site like Webstagram, which features the most popular users and hashtags based on your search. From your searching, create a list of accounts that you think would be a good fit to work with.

Get to know the influencer and the material they post. Take time to look through their account, understand their personality, tone, and writing style by reading their captions, and make note of a few specific posts you really stood out to you. Like posts, comment, and share them to show your interest in their account!

When it comes time to reach out to the influencers on your list, send an email saying how much you love their account and tell them that you sell X products on your recently launched an online store. Express your interest in sending them samples and ask if they would consider sharing it with their followers if they like it. Don’t forget to ask for an address to send the sample to! And of course, include your contact information and website in case they have any questions.

You sealed the deal for a partnership and now you can illustrate your vision for the campaign with your influencer. Make an action plan, go through it with them to receive their thoughts and feedback, and make the necessary adjustments that you both agree on. Figure out the final details and get you’re good to get started!

But remember, Instagram isn’t the only place influencers can be found. Do a Google search to find bloggers, search YouTube for vloggers, and search other social platforms, too.

When promoting a product, influencers will specify that it is an ad/sponsored post and tag you or provide your website.

Use Tools and Apps to Promote Your Product

Dedicate some time to look through the app store to see what apps are out there that can help drive traffic to your site. When used properly, apps are helpful tools that can be used to your advantage!

Example: app is a fashion app that lets users shop their screenshots. It’s as simple as can be: the user takes a screenshot of an influencer’s photo on social media or the mobile web and then they are able shop the products in their screenshot. This allows users to turn Instagram photos into ecommerce by tagging links where people can buy the products.

Pitch it to the Press

The newspaper isn’t dead; just because your store is digital doesn’t mean all of your advertising has to be. Write a short pitch to your local paper asking for the opportunity to get your site featured.

Again, research is the first step. Figure out if you want to be featured in a large paper or a small one. Then, search for journalists at those papers to reach out to. A great place to start the research process is Twitter, thanks to the fact that it is easy to track down and connect with journalists. Create a list to contact.

Read articles written by the reporters you plan to reach out to. Familiarize yourself with their writing style and where they excel so you can be sure they are a good match to write about your product.

Finally, email the journalists on your list from above. Tell your story, explain what makes you and your product unique, and talk about your product in interesting ways.

Ask Customers to Leave Reviews

Such an easy thing to do! Google crawls your product page for new content, making this is a great way to get new content added to your page to keep it fresh, without you requiring you to do a ton of work. Many sites don’t update product pages on a regular basis, so customer reviews keep your page active while adding content. Customer reviews will drive more traffic to your site, increase conversions, and improve your SEO!

After a customer makes a purchase, email them to ask for a review. Make sure to do this when the purchase is still on the customer’s mind, but give them enough time to receive the product and use it so they will have an opinion to provide.

Or, leave a section on product pages asking for reviews as well as a place for customers to submit their review on that specific product.

Another option is using a review site. Outside review sites like Yelp leave it up to your current customers to persuade future customers to purchase from you. No need to be worried about fake reviews – these sites authenticate reviews so you and your customers know that the author of the review actually bought the product.
