16 Jun Grow Your Local Business with Google – Action Item Friday
It’s something I get asked all the time. Small business owners, mom and pops, neighborhood brick and mortars- they all want to know how to grow your local business with Google.
There isn’t a short, easy answer to the question, but if you want foot traffic, here’s an Action Item Friday tip for you:
Take a NAP
No, not a siesta… NAP is an acronym for Name Address Phone Number. And while it seems like something you really shouldn’t have to worry about too much, there is actually a trick to it.
If you’re a small business owner, you need to make sure you have claimed your Google My Business listing. If you haven’t, that’s your action item. Once you claim your business, Google will mail you a postcard to confirm your business address. On that card will be a number you will type in to verify your ownership. It takes about a week for the card to arrive, so if you’re just taking this step today, you can come back and read the rest of this post NEXT Friday. Have a great weekend.
If you already have claimed your business, go log in right now.
Here’s what you want to check. Make sure the name, address, and phone number in your GMB account EXACTLY matches the way you have it on your website. Exactly.
So in our case, even though our website is www.islaagency.com, we refer to ourselves as Isla Marketing on our website. So in our Google My Business account, that’s how we have our name. Isla Marketing in GMB, and Isla Marketing in the Title tag of our home page.
Our legal name is Isla Marketing Agency LLC. I recommend against using your full legal name in this scenario. Use the name you want to be remembered by.
Same with the phone number and address. Make sure they match EXACTLY from GMB to your website.
And if you haven’t put your address and phone number in the footer of your website yet, that’s your other action item for today.
You can see how this data gets displayed in the image to the right. That’s from our account. You’ll also notice that since we spelled out “Suite” in our GMB account, I spelled it exactly the same way in our website footer. It might be overkill, but we’re trying to show up in searches, so why take chances?
